Curriculum Rationale
At Charnwood Primary school, our whole school value is ‘Together’. With this in mind, we aim to work in partnership with parents, teachers, children, governors and the wider local community to ensure that all children are supported to grow into positive, confident children with high aspirations and the ability to work and co-operate with others. We want all of our children to develop their knowledge and skills so that they reach their full potential and are able to make a positive contribution towards making the world we live in a happy and peaceful place for all.

The curriculum at Charnwood embraces all that is learned through school, whether in lessons or as part of informal learning within and beyond the school day. It includes not only the legal requirements of the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2, but also the wider range of activities that the school provides in order to enrich the experiences of the children. The school has a clear focus on the personal development and well-being of each child, as well as on their academic progress.
Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that all children’s knowledge is well-developed:
- It is progressive and carefully sequenced so that children’s knowledge builds on their prior learning. It is clear what important knowledge the children will learn and when it will be learned.
- There are many opportunities to revisit important knowledge in all subjects to help children remember more and make links across other subjects.
- It is vocabulary rich, providing many opportunities to develop language development through the explicit teaching of key vocabulary, oracy opportunities and the inclusion of rich and varied texts.
- It takes account of, and further develops, the diversity of children’s interests and experiences outside of school in order to provide a personalised curriculum for our own community.
- It exposes children to a broad range of experiences and knowledge that they may not otherwise access in order to develop their cultural capital and wider understanding of the world.
- It teaches children about how to live safe and healthy lifestyles.
Furthermore, our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure that all children develop the skills and dispositions that they will need in order to be successful:
- It prioritises oracy opportunities to support children in being able to communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings effectively and confidently, in a range of different situations.
- It enables children to work co-operatively and collaboratively with others in order to develop their independence, confidence and ability to achieve high outcomes.
- It prioritises and promotes reading to enable children to learn across all areas and to be confident readers who love books and understand their value.
- It develops children’s creativity, problem-solving, evaluative and enquiry skills in order to support them in becoming life-long learners.
- It supports children in developing a growth mindset so that they can become independent, resilient learners with high aspirations for their futures.
